South Coast Botanic Garden Children’s Garden

The South Coast Botanic Garden has a rich history that informs the Children’s Garden design. Once a shallow coastal sea 15 million years ago, it was both a diatomaceous earth mine and a sanitary landfill in the 20th century. From the moment you arrive at the Garden, the undulating entry road conveys that this is no ordinary landscape. This led the design team to the overarching design concept for the Children’s Garden: a series of playful hummocks and hollows. By moving from high to low and back high again, we can fully explore the idea of digging into the layers of the garden—its soils, history, meanings—to uncover something surprising. For kids, and adults, the rolling motion of going up and down is a fun physical sensation.
